A Case Study about the Effectiveness of Play Therapy for a Child with Maladjustment Problems due to Sibling Conflict

Abstract
This case is about the effect of play therapy for a child who showed anxious and nervous emotional problems, competitive and aggressive behavior problems, negative and alienated relational problems due to severe sibling conflicts. The child was a eight-year-old boy, and total of 28 play therapy sessions were administered. The goals of the play therapy included: (1) reduce anxiety and nervousness, and mitigate somatic symptoms; (2) learn social skills so that brothers can cooperate and constructively solve conflicts; (3) through parent education, parents acquire affection - autonomous parenting attitudes instead of rejection - controlled parenting attitudes; and (4) participate in group activities with peers in a collaborative manner and improve empathy for others. After the sessions, it was found that (1) anxiety, nervousness, and somatic symptoms were mitigated. as a result of comparing the pre - and post analysis, the clinical level of pre-test changed to normal level at post ? test; (2) as the tendency to cooperate and accept each other¡¯s influences in sibling relationships increases, the frequency of active participation and pleasure reporting increases; (3) as a result of parenting
attitude changed to affection - autonomous parenting attitude; and (4) mother and teacher reported that peer relationships improved and active participation in group activities increased. This study is of great significance in that it verified the effectiveness of play therapy for a child with severe sibling conflict.
